BMW eDrive, the electrical drive component of BMW iPerformance models, delivers maximum driving pleasure almost silently and without local emissions. Three parts form the core of eDrive: the electric motor, the lithium-ion high performance battery and intelligent energy management.

Day-to-day commutes can comfortably be completed using only the electric motor, without any local emissions. And, depending on the situation, the electric motor and petrol engine work together to provide short bursts of acceleration - the eBoost function - for a more dynamic driving experience.

All vehicles with BMW eDrive technology rely on a high-tech lithium-ion battery. It's partnered with a cooling system that keeps it at its optimum operating temperature, increasing its output and service life. Recharging is possible wherever electricity is available; from a 230-volt household socket to dedicated electric car charging points.

Intelligent energy management.

Intelligent energy management is one of the main pillars of the BMW eDrive concept. This system coordinates the interaction of all BMW drive components with the electric motor in order to combine the best possible efficiency with great driving dynamics, and to increase the electric range. 

BMW iPerformance driving modes

Driving modes.

BMW iPerformance cars have three different drive modes that allow the driver to significantly influence the car's actual energy consumption (the driver's individual style also has a large impact on consumption).

In AUTO eDRIVE mode, the intelligent BMW EfficientDynamics system determines the most efficient combination of electric motor and combustion engine depending on the driving speed and the battery charging status.

This mode is divided into two phases: If the battery charging status is between 12% and 100%, you can drive in purely electric mode. At higher speeds or with more demanding requirements, the petrol engine switches on automatically. 

In MAX eDRIVE mode, you can enjoy purely electric driving, with zero emissions. At higher speeds or when the acceleration potential has been exhausted, the combustion engine switches on automatically.

When the battery charging status is low, SAVE BATTERY / BATTERY CONTROL mode enables it to be charged by the engine or allows the charging status to be maintained. In this way, the driver can save the battery capacity for purely electric driving.

A few questions answered. 

A crucial factor in making the decision is the availability of facilities for charging the vehicle at home. For example, you will require a domestic socket, a BMW i Wallbox or another charging location in your neighbourhood.

Furthermore, the benefit from the operating costs (electricity vs. fuel price) of an iPerformance model can be especially exploited if a large number of journeys can be made in electric mode. If you have charging facilities at your workplace, you could gain even more from this advantage. 

BMW iPerformance models are designed to very high technical standards, based on the same vehicle architecture as the conventional models. Independent institutes have also confirmed the safety of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles with high-voltage batteries.

Every BMW iPerformance model has a different electric range. The electric range actually achieved depends on many factors, such as the use of air-conditioning and individual driving style.

When the high-voltage battery is discharged, purely electric driving is no longer possible, but it is still possible to continue driving thanks to the combustion engine. An intelligent energy management system means no damage can occur to the high-voltage battery at any time even when displayed as completely “empty”.

The high voltage batteries are made from lithium-ion which, in contrast to conventional nickel, lead or cadmium batteries, have been optimised for use in motor vehicles.

Within the scope of the BMW Battery Certificate, your BMW Centre guarantees to rectify any defect in the high-voltage battery for the first 60,000 miles or up to a maximum of five years after delivery of the new vehicle (the first criterion fulfilled applies). If possible, you should charge your BMW iPerformance model whenever the opportunity arises – be it at home or on the move. This means that you can always take advantage of the maximum possible electric range and thus minimise fuel consumption.

Parking for a lengthy period of time (e.g. for several weeks) is of course possible, but the charge level of the high-voltage battery may decrease if the vehicle is not moved for a substantial period.

It is therefore advisable to park the vehicle with an almost fully charged battery or to connect the vehicle with a suitable charging station during lengthy stationary phases, as this will then automatically recharge the high-voltage battery if necessary.
