Exporting or importing a BMW or MINI.
To help you export or import your BMW or MINI, several documents may be required. We can assist with some documents; others will need to be arranged with various other organisations.
The requirements will depend on the age of the vehicle and where you are importing or exporting it to and from. The following information is intended as a guide only, the full requirements should always be confirmed with the vehicle licensing authorities in the exporting and importing countries.
Exporting a vehicle from the UK.
For all exports you should contact the vehicle authorities of the country you are importing the vehicle into for more information on the local importation requirements. Some countries may require the EU Certificate of Conformity (CoC). All qualifying EU & UK BMW Group vehicles are delivered with a Certificate of Conformity. If you are unable to locate the original CoC you will need to request a duplicate, please follow the process at the bottom of this page.
Importing a vehicle into the UK.
Importing a vehicle under 10 years old from an EU country.
If you’re importing a vehicle that’s under 10 years old from an EU country, you’ll require a copy of the European Certificate of Conformity (CoC) for your vehicle, and the DVLA will be able to advise in more detail, Importing vehicles into the UK: How to import a vehicle - GOV.UK
The CoC is an official document issued for all vehicles built to EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval standards and is unique to each vehicle VIN number. All EU and UK authorities recognise this document.
All qualifying EU & UK BMW Group vehicles are delivered with a Certificate of Conformity.. If, for any reason, yours is missing, please follow the process at the bottom of this page.
Importing a vehicle under 10 years old from a non-EU country.
If you’re importing a vehicle from a non-EU country, you’ll need to contact the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), who will be able to offer you an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) inspection. Importing vehicles into the UK: How to import a vehicle - GOV.UK
BMW Group does not have access to data for vehicles that were not built to EU market specifications and delivered to an EU country. The data and documentation required by the DVSA will need to be obtained from the original importing organisation in the country of export.
Importing a vehicle over 10 years old from an EU or non-EU country.
Regardless of your vehicle’s origin, if it is over 10 years old, it can normally be registered through the DVLA with a dating letter and a current UK MOT. Low Emission Zone Area.
London (ULEZ) and other Low Emission Zones.
You will find lots of useful information on the Transport for London website (tfl.gov.uk) – Ultra Low Emissions Zone and other local authority’s sites.
If you find that the vehicle checker states that your vehicle is subject to the charge, but you have reason to believe that it is compliant to the necessary EURO standard, you can request the vehicle’s Certificate of Conformity. Before requesting a duplicate, please note All qualifying EU & UK BMW Group vehicles are delivered with a Certificate of Conformity. If you are unable to find your CoC you can request a duplicate following the process at the bottom of this page.
V5 registration document.
Amend an error on a V5 registration document.
If you need to amend an error on your V5 registration document, please contact the DVLA.
Alpina cars.
Alpina vehicle COC and data requests.
For all Alpina requests on vehicles produced before 1st January 2026, please contact Sytner Nottingham, as they were the importer for Alpina cars prior to the date above and BMW UK does not have access to this data.
Requesting documents from BMW UK.
BMW Group can arrange for a duplicate CoC for a vehicle that was first registered in the UK/EU and was produced to an UK/EU market specification
A CoC for vehicles that were first registered within the EU may be available, you’ll need to complete a request form and an administration fee of £120 will be applied.
Please be aware that older vehicles generally built before 1st Jan 2000 (Motorrad products from 1st Jan 2004) did not have a CoC and some early CoC documents were not required to include vehicle emission data.
If your vehicle was originally manufactured for a non-European market, there will not be a Certificate of Conformity available.
Vehicles manufactured in a European factory, does not mean that there is a Certificate of Conformity produced as this document is only a legal requirement for vehicles sold in Europe.
Please specify which document you require a CoC or dating letter.
You will need to supply the following details for these requests:
- Full name
- Address
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) – 17 digits, this is required as the documents relate to a specific vehicle
- Make and Model
- A copy of the first two pages of the V5 (vehicle registration document)- proof of ownership
Process for requesting an electronic copy of the CoC is by emailing eccoc@bmw.co.uk please allow 2 weeks for this to be produced. Printed copies can be supplied with supporting documentation, please allow 4 weeks for these.
Process for requesting a Date of Manufacture letter is by emailing eccoc@bmw.co.uk please allow 4 weeks for this to be sent to your address, as we only action these once the payment has cleared, note we only provide printed copies of these and no electronic copies.
