RANGE OF BMW
ELECTRIC & PLUG-IN HYBRIDS.

All-electric range is one of the most important questions asked of an electrified vehicle. This is why the team at BMW has dedicated so much time and effort in creating their own state-of-the-art eDrive technology, which is powered by efficient lithium-ion batteries and constantly pushing the boundaries on just how far our electric adventures can go.

RANGE OF BMW<br>ELECTRIC & PLUG-IN HYBRIDS.
  • What is the range of an electric car?

The range of an electric car depends on the battery capacity of the vehicle. Most electric cars have a range of over 150 miles, with the upcoming BMW iX, for example, set to have a range over 370 miles*. Although the current range of  BMW electric cars is already sufficient for the average user, it will continue to rise.

    *These are provisional values

  • How do the ranges differ between hybrid vehicles and electric cars?

A plug-in hybrid vehicle has a lower electric range than an electric car but a greater overall range. The purely electric range of  BMW plug-in hybrid models lies between approx. 29 to 54 miles. For most everyday users, this is entirely sufficient, whilst the added range from the combustion engine can be used for longer journeys. By comparison, the purely electric range of the BMW i3 currently extends up to 188 miles, whilst the BMW iX will feature a range over 370 miles*.

  • Can the battery of an electric car be replaced to achieve a greater range?

The battery of an electric car cannot be replaced. There is, however, a battery certificate or guarantee for the service life and output of the battery. The BMW i high voltage battery featured in the BMW i3 is protected for up to eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first (click here for more information about BMW i warranty).

  • What is a range extender and is it put to use in electric cars?

A range extender is a petrol-powered generator. In an electric car, it does not function as a direct propulsion aid because this would make the car a hybrid vehicle. Instead, it exclusively supplies the battery with power when the charge is running low. A range extender was optionally available on the BMW i3 between 2014 and 2018.

  • Is the range of an electric car adversely affected by sub-zero temperatures in winter or by heat?

When temperatures are low, additional energy is needed for heating the interior. The battery heating may also require additional energy because the high efficiency of an electric motor means it does not give off much heat. Nevertheless, it can be stated that the greater the battery capacity an electric car has, the smaller the impact by the loss of range due to heating. In summer, switching on the air conditioning may also slightly affect the range, but to a lesser extent than the heating.

  • What factors affect the high-voltage battery of my BMW electric car and plug-in hybrid?

One important external factor influencing the performance and capacity of a battery is the temperature. As you probably know from your mobile phone battery, the performance is restricted in cold and hot temperatures. In your vehicle, however, this temperature influence is largely minimised by means of optimised operating strategies. And did you know that the capacity also yields information on the range you may have? Apart from temperature, other influential factors are devices in use, such as the air conditioning, the load carried and your driving style.

  • What is the best possible way to prepare my BMW electric car and my plug-in hybrid for the next journey?

In order to get the maximum out of your vehicle from the outset, it is advisable to precondition the battery and vehicle interior. As cooling and heating require electric energy, this process should be carried out while the vehicle is still charging. To do this, simply set the desired departure time and conditioning requirements using the My BMW App* or in the menu of the vehicle itself. When the time comes to depart, the battery will then have attained the ideal operating temperature and the climate of the interior will also be at an optimum.

*This requires the ConnectedDrive Services option and a compatible smartphone. The availability and functions of the My BMW App depend on the vehicle model and may vary according to the market. You will find detailed information at www.bmw.co.uk.

  • How does my driving style affect the range of my BMW electric car and plug-in hybrid?

As is the case for a vehicle with a conventional propulsion system, driving style also affects the range in an electric car. As a general rule, an anticipatory, relaxed and uniform style of driving optimises your range. During recuperation, that means whenever you lift your foot from the accelerator pedal, kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and fed into the battery – and as a result you gain further miles in range.
