Our world is changing rapidly: cities are becoming megacities, more people are moving more often, yet there’s a growing desire for authentic values and a sustainable lifestyle. In BMW i, these 21st century aspirations are met systematically and comprehensively.
With BMW i we questioned every assumption about travel and re-thought what a “concept vehicle” should be. So we created new production sites and manufacturing processes, a powerful and emission-free electric drive, and a visionary, sustainable design. The result is the BMW i3 and the BMW i8.
The BMW i3 is a fully developed high-tech vehicle that points to the future of motoring by redefining it. It’s visionary, innovative and systematically sustainable. The BMW i3 is more than a vehicle. It is an attitude to life.
As a plug-in hybrid, the BMW i8 combines the performance of a sports car with the consumption of a compact car. Its design, aerodynamics and stylish details are proof that sustainability is not a sacrifice but an attitude.
BMW LifeDrive is the first vehicle architecture designed especially for electric mobility. Chassis, drive components and battery are accommodated securely in the drive module, allowing the life module to be dedicated passenger space. The life module is manufactured from high-strength carbon, a first for a mass production vehicle.
Carbon fibres are finer than human hairs, weigh only half as much as steel, yet are extremely robust. The means greater safety, less weight and more agility on the road.
At BMW i sustainability is our supreme guiding principle. So we developed the life cycle of BMW i vehicles with the maximum conservation of resources and sustainability.
Rather than make existing models electric, BMW i vehicles have been designed for electric mobility from the outset. This encompasses aerodynamic design, and the materials that are used. Wherever possible, sustainable or recycled materials are used.
New energy for new ideas: the BMW i plant in Leipzig obtains 100% of its energy from regenerative sources, among them four wind turbines installed on the site. The carbon fibre itself is manufactured in a plant powered completely hydro-electrically.
Zero emissions – and almost free of noise and odour. Driving BMW i is fun and reduces air pollution. Innovations such as the ECO PRO Mode further reduce power consumption and increase the electric range.
Time for new values: 95% of the materials in a BMW i3 can be recycled. Surplus carbon fibre is fed back into production or recycled in other areas, while the battery modules can be recycled as interim storage for solar or wind energy plants.
BMW i offers a comprehensive charging service when on the move, with the world’s largest network of public recharging stations.
BMW i Ventures invests in innovative ideas that focus on the mobility requirements of the urban population. We support companies with great potential in solving future mobility issues.
As the first mass produced vehicle designed from the outset for electric driving, the BMW i3 makes everyday sustainable driving easy. Similarly, the BMW i8 embodies the vision of a modern and sustainable sports car. In BMW i vehicles you display style – and attitude.
The BMW i3 and the BMW i8 are pioneers of a new era. Where previously engine noise was a factor, motoring now takes place in almost total silence. City driving is conducted in a completely relaxed manner, and all because BMW i has redesigned electric driving in a new and sustainable manner.
On average, a car is parked for 22 hours per day. This time can be used to recharge your BMW i3 or BMW i8 via the standard charging cable, or using the BMW i Wallbox or the BMW i Wallbox Pro.
Even when you are on the move, there are many options for recharging your BMW i3 or BMW i8. The ChargeNow mobility service shows you where to find charging stations in your area, allowing your vehicle to recharge while you shop, work or relax.
Power consumption and CO2 emissions for the BMW i3 (94 Ah):
Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 0
CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 0
Power consumption in kWh/100 km: 12.6
Power consumption and CO2 emissions for the BMW i3 (94 Ah) with Range Extender:
CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 12
Power consumption in kWh/100 km (combined): 11.3
Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 0.6
Power consumption and CO2 emissions for the BMW i8 with Plug-In Hybrid BMW eDrive:
CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 49
Power consumption in kWh/100 km (combined): 11.9
Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 2.1
The driving range depends on a variety of factors, especially: personal driving behaviour, selected route, weather conditions, usage of heating/cooling and preconditioning.
The figures for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and power consumption depend on the wheel and tyre sizes selected.
