The BMW X5 M offers outstanding traction and power regardless of whether you’re scaling a mountain path or working your way through heavy traffic.

This power is delivered by the M-specific xDrive, and thanks to the standard-feature eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, rapid gear changes are possible. Even more racing characteristics can be found in the M compound brakes which achieve outstanding, motorsport-like deceleration.

The eight-speed Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic sets new benchmarks in dynamics and gear changes. The unusually fine increments between gears and the possibility of rapid changes enable optimum power delivery. At high speeds, the eighth gear reduces engine speed, in turn decreasing both fuel consumption and engine noise.

The driver can change gear manually in ‘D’ mode as well as in ‘S’ mode, via the M gear lever or the M gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.  Additionally, the driver can change gear at top speeds and use the Drivelogic function to set the shifting behaviour to one of three choices: comfortable and efficient, dynamic, or racetrack dynamics with extra-short gear change times.

Additionally there’s an  M-exclusive feature: when the vehicle is at a standstill, there is no automatic connection between the engine and the transmission, so there’s no ‘creeping’. However, while manoeuvring, for example, a short tap of the accelerator activates ‘creeping on demand’.


xDrive with M-specific features.

The intelligent BMW xDrive four-wheel drive system smoothly distributes drive power to the axles, with the electronically operated system adjusting the power distribution with lightning speed. This improves traction, directional stability, driving safety and helps to counteract over- and understeering.

In BMW M vehicles, xDrive power is directed first to the rear wheels and then the front wheels, especially when driving through curves, minimising the tendency to understeer. This means that the driver can accelerate earlier and more forcefully, fully enjoying the vehicle's potential. If desired, the front axle can receive up to 50% more of the drive torque. When Dynamic Stability Control is fully deactivated, controlled drifts are even possible.

M compound brakes

M compound brakes.

M compound brakes make use of motorsport technology, allowing them to maintain constant effectiveness and brake-fade stabilisation, even under heavy usage. The use of highly resilient materials results in excellent thermal stability, long-term durability and precise braking and reduces the brakes' weight, which has a positive effect on agility, dynamics, acceleration and fuel consumption.

The perforated, ventilated brake disc rings with six-piston brake callipers at the front ensure optimal responsiveness in wet conditions and excellent heat dissipation. The blue metallic callipers with the characteristic M logo strongly emphasise the brake discs' sporty appearance and distinct, authentic M design.


M Drive.

M Drive allows for the individual configuration of personal driver profiles, from comfortable cruising to a sporty and highly responsive set-up for use on the racetrack.

Activating either of the two saved profiles (and all of the settings saved with them) is as simple as touching one of the two M Drive buttons integrated into the M leather steering wheel.

The M dynamics buttons, for adjusting all of the individually configurable drivetrain and suspension functions, are arranged on the centre console around the gear selector.

The driver can select the DSC mode, the engine's performance characteristics, the adaptive suspension parameters, the M Servotronic steering characteristics, the shift options for the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and the appearance of the Head-up Display, all independently of each other.

An individualised detailed vehicle set-up can be created via the iDrive menu, and it can be saved by holding down one of the two M Drive buttons on the M leather steering wheel.

Racing characteristics.

With its irresistible dynamics, impressive agility and precise handling, the BMW X5 M sets new standards in its sector. Launch Control gets you off to a perfect start, and with Dynamic Drive, Dynamic Performance Control and Dynamic Damper Control, you can adjust the vehicle to suit the driving conditions.

Launch Control.

Launch Control allows maximum acceleration from a standing start. The driver deactivates Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) by holding down the DSC button, then activates Launch Control. Next, the driver selects the sequential mode with driving programme 3, keeps the vehicle in place by holding the foot brake down and presses the accelerator to kickdown.

With the starting-flag symbol illuminated, the engine will be automatically set to its ideal starting speed. Release the brake while maintaining kickdown and the vehicle will accelerate at maximum. The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission constantly sets the gear change points so that when changing up, the next optimal engine speed is available.

Dynamic Performance Control.

Dynamic Performance Control (DPC) increases athleticism by flexibly distributing drive power between the wheels on the rear axle. In combination with the other suspension regulation systems, DPC provides even greater driving precision and dynamics. Specifically designed for M, it reduces the required steering angle, so improving accuracy.

Dynamic Performance Control features two electronically controlled transmissions on the rear axle, in addition to the axle differential. These monitor the driving situation and accordingly distribute more torque to the outer rear wheel when driving through bends.

Dynamic Drive.

Hydraulically controlled stabilisers allow the Dynamic Drive suspension control system to reduce the vehicle's body roll when driving through curves or during sudden swerves. This increases comfort and agility, and makes steering more precise.

When driving straight ahead, the two halves of a stabiliser remain separate, so that the damping and suspension are not affected and can function optimally.

The system uses numerous sensors to analyse the driving situation and minimise body roll on curves. And, due to M-specific calibration with stronger roll momentum on the rear axle, the vehicle benefits from increased dynamic driving characteristics.

Dynamic Damper Control.

Dynamic Damper Control adjusts the damping force to suit the road conditions. Vehicle movement that impacts on driving response is monitored, the data analysed and passed to the shock absorbers. These then use magnetic valves to adapt the damping force to the changing road, load and driving conditions. This gives a tangible reduction in driving movements when braking, or body movements caused by bumps, cornering or acceleration for increased driving safety - due to shortened braking distance and improved ride comfort.


M Servotronic.

M Servotronic constantly adjusts the car’s power steering and ensures a direct and precise steering response even at high speeds. It also delivers supreme comfort by minimising the physical effort required for steering, as well as maximising agility when parking, maneuvering or navigating narrow or twisting roads.

M Servotronic is specifically tailored for M vehicles and offers three settings for individual configuration that can be selected with the push of a button.


BMW EfficientDynamics Technologies.

BMW EfficientDynamics is the strategy developed by BMW to minimise fuel consumption and emissions while simultaneously increasing dynamics and driving pleasure. It is a comprehensive technology package that includes the drivetrain, energy management and the vehicle concept based on intelligent lightweight construction, and it is standard in every BMW.


Auto Start-Stop.

Auto Start-Stop ensures you’re only using fuel when the car is moving. Waiting at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, Auto Start-Stop saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car comes to a stop, provided it has come to a complete stop (Steptronic transmission). You can easily switch this feature on and off with a click of a button.

A signal in the Info Display indicates that Auto Stop-Start is active. As soon as your foot is taken off the brake (Steptronic transmission), the engine re-starts automatically.

Auto Start-Stop never compromises driving comfort and safety, as it remains inactive if the engine has not reached its ideal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated/cooled, the battery level is too low or the steering wheel is being turned. And if the car starts to roll the engine re-starts automatically.


Brake Energy Regeneration.

Brake Energy Regeneration technology harnesses the kinetic energy produced by slowing or braking and turns it into electricity. Used to charge the car’s battery, it means that the alternator no longer needs to run permanently, consequently reducing strain on it. 

The result is reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – typical of BMW’s EfficientDynamics.
