End of life isn’t end of the story.

BMW is listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Group Index for its continued commitment to reducing environmental impact. This attitude is integral to every stage of the car’s life - manufacturing, use, servicing and finally recycling.

Start by thinking of the end.

BMW specialists start laying the foundations for the end of a vehicle’s life during the product development process. Our engineers and design team work closely with our very own recycling specialists to analyse the environmental impact of a car’s components. This includes:
The neutralisation of pyrotechnic devices.
During the development phase, the vehicle electronics are designed so that all pyrotechnic devices can be controlled and activated using one common interface.
Draining of fluids.
Consideration is given to making sure that all operating fluids such as oils, air-conditioning system refrigerant, brake fluid and radiator coolant can be removed quickly and simply from the vehicle once it reaches the end of its life.
Material labelling.
All components are labelled in accordance with the international ISO standards. This enables materials to be sorted in the right way.
Using recycled materials.
Recycled materials are used in various areas such as insulation, boot ventilation and other aspects of the car that are not in direct view or part of a safety feature.

Re-using your BMW the right way.

The recycling process for end-of-life vehicles takes place at authorised treatment facilities. Key to this is the recovery of valuable materials, which are placed back into the production cycle.
To return your BMW vehicle to BMW's end of life recycling network please call Rewarding Recycling on 0800 542 2002 or visit
If your vehicle is still going strong, but you wish to replace the battery, it can be returned to your Authorised BMW Centre when a new battery is installed. Alternatively, it can be delivered to one of the following facilities for recycling:
  • Civic Amenity and Recycling Centres
  • Local Authority Battery Collection Schemes
  • Licensed End of Life Vehicle Authorised Treatment Facilities
  • Licensed Metal Recycling Sites
To find your nearest recycling facilities visit and follow the instructions.
Terms and conditions of returning end-of-life vehicles.
Autogreen's network of ATF's and take-back points will take all registered BMW vehicles (including New MINI and New Rolls Royce). These sites will not charge for the disposal of these vehicles if the vehicle is complete, i.e. the vehicle must include its essential component parts, in particular its engine, coachworks/chassis, transmission drive, catalytic converter, wheels, and must not contain waste. As part of Autogreen’s Rewarding Recycling Programme they may even be able to give you a value for your vehicle’s recycled parts and metals.

BMW AdBlue.

EU regulation has been introduced to significantly reduce the levels of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emitted from diesel engines. The use of AdBlue® is one of BMW’s solutions to meet this requirement and whilst already available on a selection of BMW models, this technology will soon be rolled out across the wider diesel engine range.
The AdBlue® Solution works by neutralising much of the NOx before it passes into the environment, and a full tank will last approximately 9,000 miles before requiring a complete refill. An indicator integrated into the on-board computer will warn you when it is running low. At this point, simply arrange for your local BMW Centre to refill your tank on your behalf.
As well as being better for the environment, a lower rate of road tax can be achieved through the lower levels of CO2 emissions emitted from your car.
For further information on AdBlue®, please contact your local BMW Centre.
Disclaimer: Price offered refers to the recommended retail price and only applies when AdBlue® warning light is illuminated with a maximum of 15 litres per refill. Available at participating BMW Retailers and BMW Service-Authorised Workshops only.
