BMW iPERFORMANCE. MORE DRIVING, LESS FUEL.

BMW iPerformance models have lithium-ion batteries that can be charged from a variety of sources to give pure electric, emissions-free (at the point of use) motoring. The range in purely electric mode varies by model and with your driving style, but BMW EfficientDynamics and the different driving modes ensure that you’ll always get the best combination of responsiveness and fuel frugality.

Range.

All BMW iPerformance models feature technology to give maximum range with minimum emissions. Intelligent energy management is a key to this, coordinating the drive components with the electric motor for efficiency with great driving dynamics.
Urban driving.
When driving in the city, the BMW iPerformance models exploit the strengths of the plug-in hybrid to the full. Short distances can be driven in fully electric mode, and driving in the hybrid mode generates exceptionally low CO2 figures. 
Day-to-day driving.
On journeys of around 30 to 37 miles, the BMW 225xe has a combined fuel consumption of around 62 mpg, the BMW 330e saloon a maximum combined fuel consumption of approximately 59mpg, the BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance an average of 43 to 47 mpg, and the BMW 740e and BMW 740Le xDrive an average of 56 to 70 mpg. 
Long distance driving.
For longer journeys, in the BMW 225xe Active Tourer, the combustion engine alone powers the vehicle whenever the speed exceeds 78 mph. A combined fuel consumption of around 40 mpg gives it a range of approximately 343 miles. The BMW 330e Saloon can still deliver strong efficiency over longer distances, with an average of 34 mpg, while the BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance averages 26 mpg for an extended journey and has a total combined range of 516 miles. The BMW 7 Series iPerformance models will return average fuel consumption figures of 35 to 40 mpg for an extended journey. In all cases, these fuel consumption figures are markedly lower than that of similar cars in their class.
 

Driving modes.

All iPerformance models have an eDrive button, which allows the driver to choose between three different electric drive modes: AUTO eDrive (standard), MAX eDrive or SAVE BATTERY.
AUTO eDrive mode.
In this mode the car’s BMW EfficientDynamics system determines the most efficient combination of electric motor and engine, depending on the speed and the battery charging status. Abilities vary between models, but if the battery is moderately to fully charged, speeds of between 40-50mph can be driven purely electrically, free of local emissions and without using any fuel. At higher speeds or with more demanding requirements, the combustion engine switches on automatically. If the battery is down to approximately 10% charge, only gentle acceleration and low constant speeds in purely electric mode are possible.
MAX eDrive mode.
In the MAX eDrive mode, purely electric higher speeds of between 78-87mph, are possible, depending on the model and where permitted. At higher speeds or when the acceleration potential has been exhausted, the combustion engine switches on automatically.
SAVE BATTERY mode.
When the battery charging status is low, the SAVE BATTERY mode enables the battery to be charged by the combustion engine or allows the charging status to be maintained at 50%. This way, you can save battery capacity for purely electric driving later.
Predictive selection.
Enter the destination into the navigation system and predictive energy management analyses the planned route using data such as the speed limit and Real Time Traffic Information. It will then use the purely electric driving mode where it’s most efficient to do so - in urban traffic for example.
 

Charging.

Every time you decelerate in a BMW iPerformance model, it uses the potential energy to charge the battery. When it’s parked, you can plug in almost anywhere. Whether using a conventional household electrical socket or a BMW i Wallbox - available as an accessory - charging a BMW iPerformance model is simple. And when you’re out and about, numerous public ChargeNow charging stations are available for energy top-ups.
Home charging.
Any conventional household 230-volt power socket charges a BMW iPerformance model, and will give it a 'full tank' after approximately four hours. Alternatively, a dedicated i Wallbox is available as an accessory and will charge a BMW iPerformance vehicle in a little over two and a three-quarter hours. All BMW iPerfomance models have their charging port behind a flap on the front left side of the car, and all that's needed for charging is the included cable, which stores neatly in the luggage compartment. The charging status of the battery is displayed via the multi-coloured LED light ring on the socket, or by using the BMW ConnectedDrive App. 
Public charging.
For charging at public charging stations, a BMW Accessories cable is required. The charging time varies based on several factors, such as the strength of the current and number of active devices consuming electricity in the vehicle. The navigation system and BMW ConnectedDrive App give the driver information about the location and availability of suitable charging stations.
Authentication at the charging station and monthly billing for the energy costs use the ChargeNow card from the BMW mobility service ChargeNow.
Note: ChargeNow is a fee-based service.
