Driving modes.

Impressively dynamic and entirely free of local emissions when driving purely in electric mode, BMW iPerformance models show just what is possible. Thanks to the electric synchronous motors, the 225xe Active Tourer, 330e Saloon, X5 xDrive40e, 740Le Saloon and 740Le xDrive Saloon offer remarkable driving dynamics with tremendous torque.
BMW iPerformance cars have three different drive modes that allow the driver to significantly influence the car's actual energy consumption (the driver's individual style also has a large impact on consumption).


In AUTO eDRIVE mode, the intelligent BMW EfficientDynamics system determines the most efficient
combination of electric motor and combustion engine – depending on the driving speed and the
battery charging status.
This mode is divided into two phases: if the battery charging status is between 12% and 100%, you
can drive in purely electric mode. At higher speeds or with more demanding requirements, the petrol
engine switches on automatically. 

MAX eDRIVE mode.

In MAX eDRIVE mode, you can enjoy purely electric driving, with zero emissions. At higher speeds or
when the acceleration potential has been exhausted, the combustion engine switches on automatically.


When the battery charging status is low, SAVE BATTERY / BATTERY CONTROL mode enables it to be
charged by the engine or allows the charging status to be maintained. In this way, the driver can save
the battery capacity for purely electric driving.

Predictive energy management.

Once a destination has been entered into the navigation system, predictive energy management analyses the planned route using constant data such as speed limits and real time information on the current traffic status. In this way, the system uses the purely electric driving mode efficiently, and on routes for which it is most beneficial.

Drive system.

A high output BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and a high efficiency eDrive electric motor are the driving forces behind BMW iPerformance models.
For example, in the 330e Saloon, the electric motor provides 88hp while the combustion engine delivers 184hp, giving an impressive combined output of 252hp.
In the 225xe Active Tourer, the internal combustion engine develops 136hp and the electric motor provides 88hp, giving a combined output of 224hp.
