HOW WE CALCULATED THE FIGURES.

The comparisons made on this page are designed to help give you a rough idea of the financial and environmental benefits of switching to an electric car.
We have based these figures on the pure electric version of the BMW i3 (not the range extended/REX version).

Annual savings.

We have calculated this by subtracting the estimated annual cost of charging the BMW i3 from the estimated annual fuel cost (of a petrol, diesel or hybrid car) for the number of 7,900 miles per year. Annual mileage taken from RAC Foundation.

Annual fuel cost (petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles).

The total amount of fuel required per year is calculated from the annual mileage (7,900 miles) divided by the vehicle's approximate mpg figure. This is then converted into litres, and multiplied by the UK average cost of 1 litre of fuel to give the annual cost for the given vehicle. This calculation is based on the following assumed MPG figures:
  • Petrol: 40mpg
  • Diesel: 55mpg
  • Hybrid: 60mpg

Fuel cost per litre is taken from the AA's monthly UK petrol price report. 109.2p per litre for petrol and 109.1p per litre for diesel (correct as of June 2016): http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/fuel/
In this example it is assumed that hybrid vehicles run on petrol.

Annual cost of charging the BMW i3.

The estimated number of full charges needed per year is calculated by dividing the user's annual mileage (7,900 miles) by the approximate 125 mile range of the BMW i3.
The cost of a single, full charge is estimated by taking the cost of 5.87 pence per kWh and multiplying it by 27.2 kWh (the approximate battery capacity of the BMW i3).
Price per kWh will vary depending on your tariff. This example is based on the current overnight rate of 5.87p/kWh EDF Blue+Price Promise July 2017 tariff unit rates in Southern region (GU14 0FB) for ‘Night rate’ - as published on 06.06.2014 on https://my.edfenergy.com/gas-electricity/unit-rate-comparison. Price excludes daily standing charge for tariff of 18.90p and is based on using the ‘Night rate’ only and not the ‘Day rate’. This can be pre-programmed into the BMW i3 to ensure you use the most cost-effective charging times for your individual tariff. Total cost of full charge is calculated as 27.2 kWh net battery capacity multiplied by the ‘Night rate’ unit of 5.87p/kWh. Total cost per charge is therefore 159.66 pence (£1.60). Cost per mile is therefore 1.27 pence/mile.

Trips to the fuel pump.

Fuel tank capacity is used to determine the number of visits to a petrol station required per annum. This is based on a 52 litre fuel tank, which is equivalent to that in a BMW 1 Series 5-door Sports Hat

Average daily battery use.

An approximate number of miles travelled per day is calculated by dividing annual mileage (7,900 miles) by 365. This figure is then divided by 125 (approximate range in miles of the BMW i3 on a single, full charge) to give a percentage value for the amount of battery used.

Comfort.

The Comfort driving mode is the standard driving mode for the BMW i3 and channels full power from your batteries to all functions so you can enjoy the driving pleasures of the BMW i3. Your top speed and throttle response are also set to their limit to ensure you arrive at your destination without delay.

ECO PRO.

Adjusting your drive mode to ECO PRO will extend the range of the BMW i3 by a further 15%. You'll be able to reduce the maximum top speed to regulate power consumption, while unessential comforts like air con and heating are scaled back for the time being. Everything is under your control, so you can balance power to comfort features as you see fit.

ECO PRO+.

If you need to extend the range of the BMW i3 to its full potential, switch your driving mode to ECO PRO +. This will switch off all unessential comfort features, reduce acceleration and limit your top speed to 56mph. By making these temporary sacrifices and distributing power more efficiently, you’ll be able to extend your journey significantly by 25% over comfort mode.
