BMW i.

BMW i is all about visionary electric vehicles and services, inspiring design and a new definition of premium that is defined by sustainability and pursues a holistic approach. BMW i redefines the idea of personal transport with purpose-built car concepts and a focus on sustainability throughout the entire process – from materials to end-of-life recycling – and a host of complementary mobility services.

Carbon Fibre.

BMW i is revolutionising automotive engineering with the first series-produced passenger cell made of carbon fibre, a key element of BMW EfficientDynamics lightweight construction technology. Carbon fibre is around 50% lighter than steel and almost 30% lighter than aluminium. This lets BMW i set new standards in lightweight construction, at the same time completely offsetting the additional weight of the high-voltage lithium ion battery. Not only that, carbon fibre is also a highly resilient material that offers increased safety for driver and passengers.

LifeDrive architecture.

BMW LifeDrive is the first vehicle architecture custom-built for electric cars. It is created from two separate units: the Life module – the passenger cell made of carbon fibre – and the Drive module, comprising the suspension, drive components and high-voltage battery. The advantage? By securely housing all drive components in the lower module, there is no transmission tunnel running through the middle of the car, leaving more room for passengers. LifeDrive architecture not only compensates for the extra weight of the battery, it also lowers the car’s centre of gravity, giving every BMW i the kind of agility you expect from all our cars.

BMW eDrive.

The innovative BMW eDrive technology is the result of many years of BMW EfficientDynamics development. Three key features combine to deliver an unequalled sustainable driving experience. The entire torque of the agile electric motor is available almost instantly, from a standing start, and uninterrupted acceleration is maintained up to the maximum speed. Innovative battery technology brings together the ultra-powerful high-voltage battery with a cooling system that maintains the ideal operating temperature and boosts battery life and performance.
The intelligent energy management system ensures optimal interaction between the electric motor and the high-voltage battery. The aim is to achieve maximum performance with minimum consumption. Regenerative braking through the one-pedal driving system extends the car's range. Together with the ECO PRO+ driving mode, the push of a button is all it takes to tune all of the systems towards maximum efficiency and intelligent use of energy reserves.

A long tradition.

BMW EfficientDynamics continues a long tradition with many innovative highlights.
BMW EfficientDynamics delivers a clear reduction in energy consumption and emissions while increasing performance and driving pleasure. With BMW eDrive, efficient motor and drive technologies and intelligent, lightweight construction, sustainable mobility is already standard across the BMW range — and complemented by many innovative developments – for example, in aerodynamics. BMW i is also developing new ideas on electromobility based on these existing technologies.

Design philosophy.

BMW i applies a consistent design philosophy that combines innovative sustainability with premium quality across the range. Features like the black band that runs from the bonnet over the roof to the rear of the cars, the instantly recognisable BMW i stream-flow design, aero-flaps and characteristic u-shaped LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights. Sustainably produced, light materials are a defining feature of the interior.
