BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance systems in the
BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo.

A host of innovative technologies are on hand during your journey, guaranteeing first class comfort and safety. This allows you focus on what really matters − driving pleasure.

BMW Head-Up Display.

The full colour BMW Head-Up Display projects all information relevant to the journey directly into the driver's field of vision, allowing them to concentrate on driving. The display includes data such as speed, navigation tips, speed limit information, no-overtaking indicator, telephone and entertainment lists, along with information and warnings from the various driver assistance systems.

Featuring a sleek design and superior range of services, the Professional Navigation System is seamlessly integrated into the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. It features a hands-free facility, USB interface, 8.8" LCD colour display touchscreen and Radio BMW Professional with a DVD player, and comes with a three-dimensional map display and 20 GB of memory. The system is operated intuitively with the new active tiles menu via BMW Touch command.

Map updates are available over-the-air up to four times per year for three years without license fees.

Driving Assistant.

The Driving Assistant package spots danger before it’s too late, combining Lane Departure Warning and Approach Control Warning systems. Lane Departure Warning detects lane markings and alerts the driver to an unintentional lane change (i.e. when the indicator has not been activated) with gentle steering wheel vibrations at speeds above 43 mph.
If a vehicle ahead brakes suddenly, Approach Control Warning is immediately activated – flashing a symbol at first, before emitting a warning sound and finally lightly applying the brakes (when travelling at speeds under 37 mph).
In cities and at speeds between 6 and 37mph Person Warning operates in a similar way, warning of a potential collision with a pedestrian by emitting a warning and pre-conditioning the brakes for a faster response. In the event of an emergency, the system actually applies the brakes. (This function can be limited by darkness and fog).

Park Assist.

Park Assist makes parallel and bay parking easier. Whether activated or not, the system measures potential spaces while driving past at below 21 mph, and at a maximum distance of 1.5m from the row of parked cars. When a large enough gap has been found, the driver simply turns on the indicator and Park Assist takes over the steering, while the driver continues to operate the accelerator, gears and brakes. The system also gives instructions in the Control Display and additional acoustic signals.

Lane Change Warning.

If the indicator is activated at speeds of 12mph or more, the radar-based Lane Change Warning detects vehicles in the blind spot and in the neighbouring lane. If a vehicle is there, the driver is alerted by a triangular warning symbol on the exterior mirrors. If, in spite of this, a driver indicates the intention to change lanes by activating the indicator, they’re alerted by a vibration in the steering wheel and the triangular warning symbol on the exterior mirrors flashes.
