Under the bonnet, the redesign continues, with a series of crucial engine upgrades that make the new BMW 1 Series 5-door best in its class.
Each model features next-generation BMW TwinPower Turbo engines based around 500cc cylinders in three, four or six cylinder configurations. Every one of these (including a brand new range of class-leading diesel engines) has been fine-tuned to minimise friction and reduce thermal losses, thereby increasing efficiency and decreasing emissions to outstanding levels.
This is also aided by innovations such as ECO PRO mode, which maximises the efficiency of everything from driving style to climate control. Additionally, Auto Start-Stop turns off the car’s engine when it comes to a temporary standstill (such as in traffic or at lights).
The BMW 1 Series features either a six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed Steptronic Automatic transmission (Sports Automatic transmission is standard on 125d models). This advanced Automatic transmission is another key feature, providing improved acceleration, reduced fuel consumption compared to its predecessor and a superior driving experience. Performance has also been enhanced by engines offering improved torque characteristics and power and can be enhanced further by additional features such as Variable Sport Steering (standard on M135i) and Adaptive M suspension available at extra cost.
In order to ensure a fast response when accelerating, the new BMW 1 Series 3-door uses the latest BMW Turbo technology with BMW TwinPower Turbos fitted to all petrol engines and variable geometry turbines diesel engines. All models are fitted with either single or twin turbos depending on which engine is specified.
In every respect, the new BMW 1 Series 5-door is ahead of the competition.
