BMW 530d Touring - What Car?
01.01.2000 |
Diesels may be suffering a crisis of economic confidence as the Government ponders how to treat them for taxation purposes, but technically, todays oil burners are more enticing than ever.
Topping the poll is BMW's 530d. Using the latest direct injection and common-rail technology, it delivers performance that will have you checking the diesel boot badge in disbelief. And the 38.2mpg fuel figure will cheer you up even more.
Best of all, nestled as it happily is in the 5 Series chassis, this terrific engine has found a home that was made in heaven if you're an executive buyer. Near perfect ride and handling, great build and decent space all push this BMW to the top of the class.
The Touring may not be the biggest load carrier, but it's good enough for most jobs, and diesel is well suited to lugging extra weight. The auto box works well, too, and also offers Steptronic manual override (unusual with a diesel).
The words sporting and diesel normally don't sit well together, but this time the combination really couldn't work much better.
