The BMW 523i was as close to the perfect executive car as we thought you could get.

When it was launched in 1996, it went straight to the top of the class and stayed there, winning an unprecedented five What Car? awards in the process.

As if the 5 Series wasn't far enough ahead of its rivals already, BMW has decided the odd nip and tuck, and a new engine, were needed to extend the car's dominance for a while longer.

So out goes the 523i, and the 525i occupies its place in the range between the new 2.2 litre 520i and the 528i replacement, the 530i.

Although the old 523i was also powered by a 2.5 litre engine, the new motor is more powerful - up from 170bhp to 192 - while pull remains the same at a meaty 180lb ft peaking at 3500rpm.

On the road, that translates to impressive standing start and overtaking performance, which is made all the more pleasurable by the smoothness of the power delivery and the glorious growl from the six-cylinder in-line engine.

Other than a new 2.5 litre diesel, the only other changes to the 5 Series range are purely cosmetic. Sexy new head and tail-light units will have owners of older Fives scurrying off to the spares department, a wider BMW 'kidney' grille, restyled front spoiler and body-coloured side strips are all that identify the new cars. It's great news for keeping used values firm, although not so good if you want to trade in an old Five for something different.

But then why would you want to? The bits that BMW haven't changed remain as impressive as ever. The ride quality is a perfect blend of comfort and feel, while the handling is responsive and secure, making the 5 Series feel as nimble as many smaller 'sportier' models.

Save for new audio systems with the option of a widescreen TV, the interior is unchanged, which means ample space and superb build quality. Equipment levels, both luxury and safety, and prices are more competitive than ever, too.

Verdict
An executive buyer who overlooks the 5 Series is a fool to him or herself.
