Z4 comes in with a bang
23.06.2006 |
BMW's engineers like to refer to the 3.0-litre version of their new Z4 Coupé as 'the civilian model'. No such term exists for the hot M derivative, but given the explosive power on offer, 'military hardware' wouldn't be far off the mark.
For a start, the six-cylinder engine's 343bhp and 269lb ft of pull are sufficient to shoot the coupé to 62mph in just 5.0 seconds and on at a relentless rate all the way to an electronically limited 155mph.
Scintillating performance, then, is a given, as is the aural bombardment that accompanies the arrival of maximum power at a howling 7900rpm. However, perhaps the best ingredients of the M recipe are the rapid responses and phenomenal chassis control.
Even with the power cranked up to bursting point, the handling remains unflustered, boosted by a grip-enhancing rear differential and fluid steering.
If you do push too hard on a tightening bend, a host of electronic driver aids and hugely powerful brakes prevent it getting white-knuckled.
Despite all this suspension control, you don't have to put up with a harsh ride. The suspension is taut enough to minimise bodyroll but it's also supple, so even vicious mid-corner bumps do little to upset your equilibrium. Inside, the cabin is beautifully trimmed and provides an excellent driving position behind the chunky three spoke steering wheel thanks to snug, hide-covered sports seats.
Not everything is perfect, though. This car demands to be driven with commitment and precision - in other words, quickly. The sharp clutch and slick-shifting six-speed gearbox, so wonderfully fluid at speed, start to feel pretty clunky devices at lower speeds.
Equally, a combined 23.3mpg and a 55-litre fuel tank limit the touring range, while the battery takes up much of the dinky boot. Rear visibility isn't brilliant, either.
Even so, these are minor gripes in a wonderful driver's car.
