our support.

We are proud to be the Official Automotive Partner to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As a domestic sponsor, Sustainability Partner and Supporting Partner of the Olympic Torch Relay, it is our role to provide a diverse fleet of vehicles below the required CO2 emissions target of 120g/km which meets the challenging operational requirements of the Games. London 2012 will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we are honoured to play a significant role in this moment in history.

Our Sponsorship.

As the automotive sector leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes for the seventh consecutive year, our sustainability credentials recommend us as the natural Official Automotive and Sustainability Partner for London 2012. Sustainability is embedded into everything we do - from our class-leading product range to our manufacturing operations. Even back in 1972, we supplied our first electric vehicle to escort the Munich Olympic marathon. Now, 40 years later, with our fleet of sustainable vehicles, we will support the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) in their objective to stage the 'most sustainable Games' ever.

Our EfficientDynamics strategy has a natural affinity to the requirements for elite athletic performance - and drives our sponsorship of the BMW London 2012 Performance Team. Delivering maximum performance with minimum effort is what every athlete needs to succeed. This ethos is also at the heart of BMW EfficientDynamics - a range of technologies designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions without compromising performance.

It is not only a deep-seated commitment to technical innovation which makes us a natural partner to the Games but also our contribution to the UK automotive sector and economy. As a major manufacturer, investor, employer and custodian of the two truly iconic British brands MINI and Rolls-Royce, it's particularly fitting that BMW Group UK has been chosen as the Official Automotive Partner to the first Games to take place in the UK since 1948.

Our Commitment.

As the Official Automotive Partner of London 2012 we will provide low-emission diesel, hybrid and electric cars as well as motorcycles and bicycles to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). Our low-emission vehicle fleet will provide essential mobility for athletes and officials that is vital for the operational success of the Games and will achieve the challenging 120g/km CO2 emissions threshold required by LOCOG. The majority of the fleet will be made up of highly efficient diesel-powered cars, featuring EfficientDynamics technologies. We are also providing a number of adapted vehicles, enabling disabled people for the first time to volunteer as drivers during the Games.

Fleet facts.

The official vehicle fleet will comprise:

  • Highly efficient diesel vehicles (BMW 320d and 520d EfficientDynamics and 318d)
  • 200 electric vehicles (40 MINI Es and 160 BMW 1 Series ActiveEs)
  • BMW 5 Series Active Hybrid
  • Motorcycles (BMW R1200 RT, R1200 GS, F650 GS)
  • 400 BMW Cruise bicycles
  • Electrically-assisted BMW Pedelec bicycles

The low emission fleet will meet the diverse needs of the Games.

Our Sustainability Strategy.

We want to demonstrate that the BMW Group is shaping its future. In doing so, our focus is on all three aspects of sustainability - economic, environmental and social. We are realising our commitment to product responsibility in a wide range of ways: making our production network increasingly resource-efficient, implementing holistic recycling concepts and a sustainability strategy that encompasses every one of our sales organisations around the world. Our collaborations with research partners and cities around the world are bringing forth new concepts to make tomorrow's transport more efficient and eco-friendly.

Our route to sustainable mobility is via EfficientDynamics: this concept combines drive technologies, lightweight design, aerodynamics and optimised energy management in our vehicles. EfficientDynamics makes it possible to combine dynamic driving with efficiency - now and in the future. We develop innovative solutions that reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Understanding how electric cars are driven in the real world has taken an important step forward with the release of data from the MINI E field trial in the UK. Since the middle of 2009, more than 1,000 customers across Europe, Asia and the USA have been putting day-to-day electromobility to the test. As part of our MINI E field test campaign, they took more than 600 MINI E vehicles out onto the roads, clocking up more than 15 million kilometres in total and delivering invaluable insights into the challenges and most of all into the opportunities of electromobility.

A milestone in sustainable mobility.

Our collaborations with research partners and cities around the world generate new mobility concepts that will help make tomorrow's urban transport more efficient and environmentally-friendly, as evidenced by our global full-electric MINI E field trial.

  • The objective of this field trial was to put electric vehicle usage to the test in real life.
  • 1,000 customers have clocked up almost 10 million miles to date, delivering invaluable insights into the opportunities and challenges created by this new way of personal mobility.
  • 90% of customers who took part in this trial did not feel restricted by the MINI E's range or charging times, indicating the increasingly strong potential of this technology.

Shaping the future.

The learnings from the electric vehicle trials have shaped the development of our first purpose-built electrically-powered models which will be available to customers from 2013 onwards. Initially called the 'Megacity vehicle', the BMW i3 incorporates the revolutionary carbon fibre (reinforced plastic) architecture that will also form the basis of the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sportscar. Due for launch shortly after the i3, the i8 will redefine the perceptions and expectations of desirable environmentally-friendly vehicles, combining the exceptional performance of a sportscar with the fuel-efficiency of a compact vehicle.
